At Beyond Vision Center Carlsbad, we strive to provide those suffering from low vision with the appropriate evaluation, treatment, and visual aids to preserve existing vision and improve everyday activities. Living with low vision can be greatly improved with the right eye care, and our practice is proud to provide access to these resources.

What is Low Vision?

Low vision encompasses a variety of vision issues, from complete vision loss to mild visual impairment. It is more than just poor vision and applies to anyone whose visual impairment cannot be corrected with glasses or surgery and is significant enough to make everyday activities difficult. Low vision primarily impacts the senior community, but can occur in patients of all ages.

Eye doctors look for the following criteria to diagnose low vision:
  • Visual acuity: Reduced best-corrected visual acuity.
  • Visual field: Peripheral vision loss (narrow, tunnel vision).
  • Contrast sensitivity: Difficulty in distinguishing colors or shades.
  • Functional impact: Reduced ability to perform daily tasks such as reading, driving, or seeing in low light.

Common Causes of Low Vision

Because low vision presents in many ways, it has a variety of causes, from acquired diseases and injuries that cause vision loss to genetic and congenital conditions. Some of the most common causes include:

Macular degeneration

This condition typically affects people over 50 and causes a gradual loss of central vision. You might develop a blurry or blind spot in your central vision field that slowly becomes more noticeable with time.

Cataracts

Another age-related condition. A cataract is a cloud on the eye lens, which can typically be removed surgically, but not everyone is a candidate for surgery.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a progressive condition that damages your optic nerve. This usually impacts your peripheral vision and night vision first.

Diabetic retinopathy

This complication of diabetes causes blood vessels in your eye to leak fluid, damaging it over time.

Congenital vision impairment

This refers to vision loss or significant vision impairment present at birth. This condition occurs when a baby’s eyes do not develop properly during pregnancy.

Eye or brain injuries

A traumatic injury to your eye or brain may cause lasting damage to your vision.

Inherited retinal diseases

These conditions are present at birth and can cause progressive vision loss.

How Do Our Eye Doctors Treat Low Vision?

Treating low vision involves two key goals: preserving existing vision and finding the right tools to make everyday tasks easier. Dr. Turrill is a specialist in helping patients with low vision identify the best ways to adapt, whether that means updating their prescription, identifying devices that may make everyday life easier, or improving their overall quality of life through referrals to counseling and courses.
Is a Low Vision Exam Similar to a Senior Eye Exam?
There is some overlap between low vision exams and a senior eye exam, especially when it comes to checking for refractive errors, glaucoma, cataracts, myopia, and other common conditions. Additionally, there will be time dedicated to discussing your general health, age, and whether ocular problems run in your family. It is important for us to perform an intake of information beyond the exams, including how much your vision is impacting your ability to read, drive, and perform other necessary daily tasks like cooking.
Dr. Turrill will perform additional exams to check your visual clarity and contrast sensitivity, and utilize a larger range of letters to accurately determine the level of impairment. Our goal is to ensure that you maintain your existing vision, if possible, and have access to every eye care resource available to make everyday life easier and more independent. In addition to developing our own low vision program, we work closely with the San Diego Center for the Blind, often referring patients to specific counseling services and lessons from which they may benefit.
How Can Visual Aids Help?
While not technically a direct vision treatment, visual aids are one of the most promising ways to bridge the gap between your eyes and the world around you. There are resources for optical, digital, and audio devices that may provide relief and clarity.

Some examples of vision aids may include:

  • Telescopic glasses
  • Magnifying glasses
  • Reading prisms
  • Tinted lenses
  • Wearable audio devices
Eye care technology is rapidly advancing, and every year there are more options for our patients to choose from. Lately, some patients have experienced success utilizing Meta’s new smart glasses, which can perform tasks such as discreetly reading documents and menus aloud.
Could I Benefit from Additional Vision Care?
If you are on the fence about whether or not you qualify as someone with low vision, it’s always best to have as much information as possible. Even if you don’t technically qualify as a low vision patient, we want to help you preserve your vision and maintain your ocular health. If you have any questions or doubts, we recommend scheduling an appointment with Dr. Turrill at BVC Carlsbad. Moreover, we recommend annual eye exams for everyone.
How Can I Maintain My Existing Eye Health?
Preserving your existing eye health is a worthwhile goal, no matter your age or current vision status. As eye doctors, we recommend annual vision exams to ensure that your glasses or contacts are best supporting your existing vision, and to discuss any symptoms of changing or deteriorating vision. Ultimately, the best way to take care of your vision is to consult a vision care professional and utilize the resources we recommend.
